| INTRODUCTION TO SKIN CARE | ||||
Boca Raton Esthetician: Skin care treatments, Microderm abrasion, chemical peels, etc. From early on, we learn that having a smooth, clear complexion is an attribute of physical attractiveness. However, as we age, maintaining that healthy glow becomes more difficult. The face is the most exposed part of the body, vulnerable to the harsh rays of the sun. The face is also subject to acne, rashes, allergic reactions, and injuries that may leave permanent scars. This website will give you a basic understanding of commonly used treatments for managing skin-when they can help, what they involve, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances, so making an appointment is best advised. Ask Cheryl Ann anything you don't understand about the treatment you're considering, she will certainly guide you in the right direction. A number of non-surgical "refinishing" treatments are available for individuals who want to eliminate or soften imperfections on their facial skin and achieve a clearer, fresher look. These treatments include alpha hydroxy acids, (sometimes called "fruity acids"), which are natural fruit substances blended into facial preparations and are used to eliminate rough or dried surface skin, TCA peels (some of which are superficial, and some a little more aggresive) and Retinol treatments that change the cellular metabolism of the skin's surface and is used to combat fine facial wrinkles and blotches from sun damage. Each of these treatments can be used alone, or are frequently prescribed in conjunction with non surgical options such as IPL, injections (Botox, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, etc.) as well as an aesthetic surgical procedure, such as a facelift. The goal and expectations of the client are discussed throughly prior to any program being suggested, as Cheryl Ann refers to the physician, and vice-versa. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SKIN-SURFACE TREATMENTS "Surface-repair" treatments can enhance your appearance and give your skin a smoother, fresher look, but they won't remove deep scars and flaws or prevent aging. These treatments should not be thought of as mini-facelifts. Mild TCA, alpha hydroxy peels and retionol treatments offer less dramatic results than surgical approaches like, dermabrasion, or high percentage chemical peels. However, these non-surgical options are a great start to overall skin improvement with less downtime and risks. Before you decide to have a skin-rejuvenating treatment of any type, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your skin care professional or plastic surgeon. Cheryl Ann is available for complimentary consultations by appointment. Whether you're planning a surgical or nonsurgical skin treatment, it's important that you find a doctor who has training and experience with a variety of skin-management techniques. You'll want a doctor who can give you the best possible single treatment or treatment combination. Look elsewhere if your doctor tells you that he or she has perfected a single technique that promises unbelievable results. The choice is yours, but be certain your doctor is qualified to prescribe such treatments. After all, these treatments involve the most visible part of your body - your face. As with searching out a well qualified physican, finding a well educated licensed esthetician with experience is also very important. As you have read previously in this website, Cheryl Ann has been practicing clinical esthetics for over 20 years. Cheryl Ann has worked with several board certified plastic surgeons, over the past 15 years. The opportunity to work on skin conditions that many clinicans have never seen has been an amazing experience. In addition to practicing in the plastic surgeons office, Cheryl Ann is a National Educator for a well known chemical peel company in which she teaches the pearls of chemical peeling and skin biology. Know that you are in the hands of someone who loves what she does, and continues educating herself and her clients on a daily base! In your initial consultation, be open in discussing your treatment goals and don't hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have. A consultation will explain the factors that could influence your choice of treatment options such as age, skin condition,as well as previous plastic surgeries. It is unlikely that you'll have to spend much time in the office for your skin treatment unless the treatment is performed in conjunction with a facelift or some other more complex procedure. Alpha hydroxy treatments and TCA peels Glycolic, Lactic or "fruity acid" treatments can offer smoother skin to people of all ages. This type of treatment seems to work best on patients who have rough, sun-damaged skin. Alpha hydroxy acids are also sometimes formulated with lightening ingredients in order to correct areas of uneven pigmentation. Tca peels are equally as popular giving the ability to customize and strengthen the treatment as the skin changes and demands further attention. Reactions/side-effects. It's important to remember that side-effects may occur even with non-surgical treatments. No serious Clinical problems have been associated with Alpha hydroxy acids, but their use may cause temporary skin irritation and redness. Switching to a milder formula may remedy the problem which will be discussed at the time of consult. Beginning treatment. Treatments vary in strength depending on skin type , but all formulas helps slough away dry, sun-damaged skin on the face's surface.Treatments may contain a special lightening agents if needed. In most cases, the acid is applied to the face , and or body parts, and left on for the remainder of the day/night. The strength of the acid formulation or the frequency of its use will change from visit to visit, after evaluating your skin's condition and how it's responded after the treatment given. After treatment. Although it is fairly uncommon to experience some redness, irritation, itching, stinging, or skin dryness once you begin the treatments, this is a very temporary side effect. You can expect these symptoms to gradually disappear as the skin adjusts to the treatments, and you continue to use the appropriate products at home. All instructions are given at the time of treatment. Caring for your new skin. Because these types of superficial treatments typically thin the skin's outer layer, you will need to consistently use a sun-block to protect yourself from ultraviolet light, and you may have to discontinue using certain products or cosmetics on you face.This is also discussed prior to treatment. Thinning this layer helps with the overall smoothness of the skin, and is very beneficial to the health of the skin. The remaining layers of the skin automatically regenerate themselves at a faster pace, which results in fresher, healthier skin with more clarity. Although the degree of change varies from person to person, with continued use of a professional regimen, you will begin to see subtle improvements in the texture and tone of your skin. In most cases, clients notice an overall freshness and smoothness. After a while, pigmented blotches fade or disappear as the lightening process continues. The time necessary for visible results depends on the degree of pigmentation and individual circumstances. Some patients see results in as little as four to six weeks. However, compliancy with home care regimens is up to 50% of the final result! You and the products you use at home are a big part of the program and it's final outcome. Most people find that maintaining their new look is easier than expected. Using the recommended program will become a natural part of your morning or evening routine - and the difference you'll see will be worth the extra effort. CAUTIONS REGARDING SUN EXPOSURE Of course, with any and all skin care treatments, progressive or aggressive, sun exposure is a concern that needs to be addressed. The consumer is now overwhelmed at the many options of sun-protection.To clear some of the confusion,there are many factors to consider.The following will hopefully guide and educate you further on the many facts about sun-protection. UVA, UVB are the two most commonly spoken about UV rays. The UVA rays are the rays that we say are responsible for aging us. "A" for "aging". UVB are said to be the rays primarily responsible for burning . "B" for burning. Sunscreens are labeled with a number on the bottle. This number is relative to the UVB protection- not the UVA. So if we look at thebig picture, the consumer needs to know if the product will also protect them against the UVA rays. Let's face it, none of us want to burn or age! So what's important to know is what ingredients are in the product that will protect you against both UVA and UVB. These ingredients will be listed as "active ingredients" on the bottle. Three most commonly used ingredients are Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, and/or Parsol 1789. (Also known as avobenzone). If you find these ingredients in the formula, it will be labeled as a "broad-spectrum" protection type product. This is what you are looking for! A formula that protects you against the harmful rays that can drastically change our skin over the years, and even result in skin cancer. So when you evaluate a product, it isn't all about the number on the bottle. It is important to know the ingredients that provide the protection against the sun. There are alot of sunscreen products that are available with very large numbers such as SPF60, SPF 85, etc. This , unfortunately gives the consumer a false sense of security when they think that this larger number will protect them all day. This couldnt be further from the truth. Here are the latest "rules "regarding sunprotection: 1.) Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes prior to leaving the building, 2.) Then apply another layer( 2nd one) rigfht before leaving for outdoors. 3.) Apply sunscreen generously, not sparingly. 4.) Always reapply every 90 minutes to 2 hours, even if your not exposed to water. 5.) Always reapply when exposed to water, even if product labels itself as being "waterproof". Remember this: Sunscreen products only work when they are used properly.
The following products are just an example of what is available.Cheryl Ann chooses not to sell products on-line because she feels that a complete one-on-one consultation is a necessity. When you purchase product in person, you have the confidence that you are getting the ingredients that the skin needs in order to make the changes you are looking for. In addition to that, knowing that the product that is given to you is new, and not close to expiration. She feels that once you purchase online, you are at risk for not only receiving an older product, but possibly damaged, and non-returnable. Cheryl Ann develops a full comprehensive program for each individual at the time of consultation. NOTE: The following section of our products is currently under construction:
